Cortinarius (Dermocybe) puniceus Orton Scharlachroter Hautkopf Cap 1.5–4cm across, convex then expanded and often obtusely umbonate, purplish blood-red or with a chestnut tone especially at the centre, more ochraceous reddish at the margin, covered in radiating silky fibres. Stem 35–70 x 3–9mm, slightly thickened at base, concolorous with cap or paler, base covered in pinkish or ochraceous down; cortina orchraceous to golden-brown. Flesh deep purplish blood-red finally deep rusty-chestnut. Spore print rust. Spores elliptic, almost smooth, 6.5–8.5 x 4–5µ. Habitat deciduous woods. Season autumn. Rare. Edibility Suspect – avoid as many Cortinarius contain toxins. Found In Europe. Note many mycologists sink this species under C. sanguineus, the only difference appears to be that this species is found in broadleaved woods.
